Did you know that if your feet are sweaty you are more likely to get a blister? That’s because blisters are caused by friction. When your feet are sweaty, fabric slides more easily over the skin and that can create a blister. Most of the time, patients don’t come to The Foot & Ankle Center, PC for blisters but if a blister gets very large and painful or if fluid leaks from it that is white or yellow, the blister may be infected and requires evaluation by our podiatrist, Dr. Leonard M. Talarico.

Usually a blister will go away on its own. New skin will form under the blister and fluid built up inside the blister will be reabsorbed into the skin. Do not pop a blister. For comfort, apply vitamin E ointment or an aloe-based cream and cover the affected area with a bandage
until the fluid is reabsorbed.

Tips for Prevention

  • Change your socks whenever you feel that they are damp.
  • Choose socks that have heels—tube socks have a tendency to bunch up creating irritation to the skin.
  • Avoid shoes that rub anywhere on your foot—remember, shoes should fit well from the moment you buy them.
  • If you do notice an irritation on your foot caused by rubbing, put petroleum jelly over the area or cover with a bandage or moleskin. Do not continue to wear the pair of shoes that is causing the irritation two days in a row.
  • If you are renting shoes or skates for a sporting activity, take the time to get a pair that fits properly.

If a blister persists for more than a week or it seems to be spreading or getting red or warm to the touch, contact our Pooler office for an appointment by calling: (912) 330–8885.
