Ah, it’s the good, old summertime and at The Foot & Ankle Center, PC we hope all of our patients have a chance to relax and enjoy these beautiful days.  We also want to remind you that summer can bring its own set of foot health challenges. Based on the conditions we see most often during the summer months, we’d like to offer these tips for keeping your feet safe and healthy while enjoying all the fun of the season:

  • Wear some kind of footwear at public pools, beach changing areas and rest rooms and any place else where others are likely to be walking barefoot. Fungal and bacterial infections such as athlete’s foot and fungal toenails are spread through direct contact. You can greatly reduce your risk of contracting one of these infections by keeping your feet covered.

  • Apply sunscreen to the tops and bottoms of your feet if you will be spending the day out in the sun. Not only is sunburn painful, it can also increase your risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.

  • Pack more than one pair of shoes for vacation. Yes, it’s nice to travel light but it’s not good to wear the same pair of shoes for multiple days in a row. Shoes need a chance to air out to eliminate perspiration and dampness, which can lead to bacterial infections. Also, friction is created between your shoes and your feet as you sweat, which can create a blister. Varying your shoes will avoid an excess amount of pressure being applied to one spot.

  • Limit your time in flip-flops. Although convenient and comfortable, these popular summertime shoes provide no arch support and can leave you with aching feet and heel pain if worn on a regular basis. They have also been proven to be a tripping hazard for many patients.

  • Seek medical treatment promptly if you do injure your foot or notice anything unusual about the skin on your feet or your toenails. Our podiatrist, Dr. Leonard M. Talarico, will examine your foot and prescribe the correct treatment to get you back to summer fun in no time. Contact our Pooler, GAoffice for an appointment by calling: (912) 330 – 8885.
