Serious foot pain is usually a sign of a podiatric problem and we at The Foot & Ankle Center, PC recommend that patients avoid putting off getting it checked out. If, however, our podiatrist, Dr. Leonard M. Talarico, has cleared you of any chronic foot disorders or injuries and you are experiencing sore, achy feet at the end of the day, here are a few suggestions:

  1. Enjoy a Foot Soak—consider this refreshing option: fill one basin with hot water and one with cold. Begin by soaking feet in the cold water for five minutes. Then switch to the hot water for five minutes. This will dilate your blood vessels and help improve circulation. Or, make a soak of hot water and a few drops of an essential oil—rosemary, peppermint or eucalyptus are all soothing.
  2. Give your Feet a Massage—sitting in a chair, cross one leg and rest your barefoot on your thigh. Rub a rich emollient lotion or oil into your whole foot. Press thumbs or knuckles into the ball of your foot and heel; gently separate toes and pull forwards and backwards.
  3. Put Your Feet on Ice—keep a small plastic water bottle filled and frozen in your freezer. While seated, roll your feet and heels over the frozen bottle for about 10 minutes per foot.
  4. Pad your Heels—as we age, the fat pads on our heels begin to wear down and lose elasticity. This means less cushioning for your heels. Over the counter heel pads or cups can help replace what nature takes away.

In addition to these treatments to help relieve foot pain, your footwear choices can go a long way to preventing foot pain from occurring in the first place. Choose shoes that are flat or have a low (less than 2 inch) heel and a wide, roomy toe box. You may be surprised at how much better your feet feel at the end of the day when you wear these types of shoes.

If foot pain seems to be getting worse, or becoming more regular, contact our Pooler, GA office for an appointment by calling: (912) 330–8885.
