If you’re like many people, one of your New Year’s resolutions may be to eat better. Whether you realize it or not, a healthy diet benefits your feet along with the rest of your body. Many foot conditions have obesity as a contributing or exacerbating factor. At The Foot & Ankle Center, PC, we want to make the following recommendations for foods that will specifically help increase foot health:

Fight Inflammation: The pain patients experience from many foot conditions, such as  plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, bursitis and  arthritis is the result of inflammation. Certain foods can actually spark or increase an inflammatory reaction. These include: refined sugars, fried foods, soda and red meat. If you suffer from inflammation you should limit your intake of these foods. There are also foods that combat or prevent inflammation, such as green leafy vegetables (kale, collard greens, spinach), fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna), tomatoes, nuts and certain fruits (strawberries, cherries, blueberries).

Build Stronger Bones: Did you know that there are 26 bones in each of your feet? That’s about a quarter of all the bones in your body! No further explanation needed as to why foods high in calcium—milk, cheese, yogurt, leafy greens and certain fish—should take center stage in your diet.

Reduce Swelling: Also known as “edema,” swelling in the feet can cause pain and discomfort. A common cause of swelling is too much salt in the food you eat. Look for low-sodium versions of your favorite soups and snacks and substitute other herbs and seasonings for salt in cooking.

Healthy eating can go a long way to preventing foot health issues but if you are experiencing chronic pain or have other uncomfortable symptoms changing your diet may not be enough to bring relief. Schedule an appointment at our Pooler office with our board certified podiatrist,  Dr. Leonard M. Talarico, by calling (912) 330 – 8885 to determine the cause of your foot pain and begin treatment if necessary.
